I am writing this on St Patrick’s Day which has been gorgeous in Dallas. Hope you had a great day whether you are Irish or not. Bill is fighting a cold so he went to bed early so I have time to catch up tonight. Well now it is Wednesday, Monday was a crazy day with a blog photo shoot and more appointments than I ever have, Tuesday my blog crashed just as I was ready to post at 8:55 am. So that’s my week so far!! You know I am always playing catch up. I hope you saw my recent Instagram post on getting your mammogram. I cannot stress this enough. Breast cancer is no joke and early detection is key. Check out this link for more information. Don’t wait!! Now on to my beauty tips for women over 50. My assistant has been encouraging me to write on this subject for a while but I felt like I had just shared my essential products for winter skin care and I tend to stick to the same routine. However I decided that this could be a different subject altogether. Women of all ages care about their skin and looking a young as possible. My mom is 91 and she is still loving new serums and anti-aging ideas.
A serum is a product typified by its rapid absorption and ability to penetrate the skin, together with its non-greasy finish, an intensive formula with a very high concentration of active substances.
Serum seems to be a skin care buzz word these days and I have jumped on the band wagon. My favorite is Kate Somerville Restore8 serum which I use daily in conjunction with her DermalQuench Liquid Lift. I really liked using Juice Beauty Signal Peptides Firming Serum and you can check out this blog for more info. I received Caudalie Radiance Serum in one of the Rachel Zoe Box of Style and liked trying it. You know I am a huge fan of Caudalie products especially my fave eye cream. I received this box of LiftLab products and enjoyed reading this article in Elle Magazine about this line and am trying the Lift + Repair Serum.
Collagen is a natural protein that functions as an adhesive to hold your body together and to provide strength and elasticity in your skin. Collagen is one of three major components of the skin, the other two being Elastin (think sagging skin as we age) and Glycosaminoglycans. As a supportive and structural protein, collagen strengthens skin and is key to the healthy and youthful looking skin. (Dr Jessica Anderson). I have actually started taking a collagen product and I’ll let you know what I think. Wish I had ordered the pills instead of the powder (it tastes kind of earthy)!!
So here’s the depressing news; according to the article I read by Dr. Anderson we start losing collagen around the age of 20. Well that just sucks. By the time you get to be my age you really notice sagging skin!! (just bend over and look at your knees). The good news there are some solutions. I love my GloPro and you can read all about it in this blog post. This is a do it yourself at home tool and basically pricks your skin (micro needling) so that it will absorb all of those fancy products and serums and antioxidants you have started using. Desperate measures are not cheap and if you can avoid plastic surgery it will be worth your time, effort and money. There are also lots of professional laser treatments available which I told you about when Tim got married and I went to Bella MD for some help. I was really pleased with the results and need to save up and go back!!!! The goal is to build collagen and restore elasticity in your skin.
I am sure that you already know that one of the most important things you can do to prevent damage to your skin is to stay out of the sun!! I didn’t do a very good job of that in my younger years – baking in baby oil and iodine for the darkest possible tan!! So dumb!! So wear sunscreen; I use La Roche-Pose 60 for my face (the French always do skincare better), and Clinique City Block. Everyone raves about SuperGoop and there are so many great sunscreens out there. I am picky and don’t like ones that sting my skin or feel sticky. Another great solution is to wear a hat whenever possible. I used to wear a ball cap every day when running around and I have gotten lax for some reason. I am reminding myself to be more diligent in my every day sun protection. The sun has finally come out again here in Dallas and believe me I need it for a boost to my overall mood. Anyone else feel kind of down on dreary days? I realized that I never remember to put sunscreen on my hands and arms. I should keep it in my car or wear gloves!! haha I hate those old age spots, my grandmother called them liver spots. Hands can really give away your age and mine look awful. Love the Elta MD products I discovered at Bella MD.
