I love New York!!! Most people who know me well are aware of this fact. I think I love to visit this amazing city because I lived here many years ago and it is familiar to me. After college I taught school for a couple of years and then started modeling with The Kim Dawson Agency in Dallas. One day I was in the agency and Kim Dawson introduced me to Wilhelmina of Wilhelmina Models in NY. She asked me to come to NY and sign with her agency. Well, I admit I was a little scared but decided to take the risk and moved to The Big Apple with my friend and fellow model Carla Pate. We did not have a place to live and ended up sleeping on the floor of the apartment of a friend of mine who flew for American Airlines. By the grace of God we found a great apartment at 90th and 3rd and that’s how I met my friend Roxie, who also was a flight attendant for AA. I have always regretted the fact that I did not stay longer in NY, but that’s history!! It has been fun in recent years to visit my daughter Liz and now my daughter Victoria in my old stomping grounds.
Virgin America was running a great special on airfares and my daughter Roxanne and I decided to take a little girl’s trip to NY for Easter this year to visit Victoria. Liz moved to San Francisco last Spring and we were hoping she could join us. Roxanne and I flew out of Love Field (hallelujah) very early Thursday morning. We landed in NY and first went to my friend Joyce’s apartment to drop off our bags. We were starving so we set out to find a restaurant .
Along the way I could not help snapping a photo of the fabulous Seaman Schepps store to send to one of my clients who loves their jewelry. When I was in NY last September Joyce took me to a great place in the bottom of the former Plaza Hotel. I thought we might find a cute sidewalk cafe along the way but ultimately ended up at The Plaza.
The entry is still very impressive and The Palm Court is as beautiful and full of light and glamour as ever. We headed downstairs to explore the amazing new Food Hall. I had eaten at The Todd English Food Hall last time and was so impressed that we went back again. We were not disappointed. After lunch we wandered around in amazement at all of the gourmet food items for sale, especially the macaroons. It is a very tempting place.
When I visit NY one of my first stops is always Bergdorf Goodman on 5th Avenue. Of course the store windows are always a sight to see, announcing Spring fashion this time.
After walking through the designer handbags and jaw dropping jewelry, my first destination was the cosmetics department because I wanted to check out Charlotte Tilbury. On my last visit I was waiting around while Joyce was shopping and ended up falling in love with the CT lipstick and gloss in just the right red for me (Love Bite and Red Vixen). Recently I heard Charolotte Tilbury speak at Nordstrom in Dallas and was very impressed with her Magic Cream (and her lovely British accent). I have been using the sample and decided to treat myself to a jar while I was at Berdorf’s.
The box says “The Magic Dew of Youth & Luminosity in a jar“. That sounds good to me and I will keep you posted on the results. She also has a very interesting concept of packaging “looks” in a box containing everything you need from blush to eyeshadow to lipstick all inspired by her long list of celebrity clients, I am sure.
After cosmetics we headed upstairs to check out the shoe department. WOW!! It is so amazing and I just love to look around and dream. I have to apologize for my photos in advance because my phone is becoming extinct and the lighting in the stores is terrible for my photos!!
I always love to look at The Row because Bergdorf’s has so much more in every designer boutique. Everything about this line is the way I would love to look and this leather jacket is a great example. (I still can’t quite believe that this comes from Mary Kate and Ashley) I could shop around forever taking in all of the latest fashions and had to take a shot of this dress with all of the detail and color. I am calling this research for Fashionomics! We went on every floor and I never get tired of this beautiful store. Did I mention the handbags?? And speaking of, I also always like to visit Henri Bendel on 5th Avenue. I think their handbags are a great value and always right on trend. I love the classy brown and white stripe signature look and find so many great pieces of jewelry and gift items. We bought a couple of wonderful candles for Joyce and Roxie to express our thanks.
In between shopping we took a stroll through Central Park. It was the most gorgeous day when we arrived and everyone was out to enjoy the sunshine. I have to say it may have been a good thing that I have been so busy working in my clients’ closets that I had not transferred my own wardrobe from Fall to Spring. It is still chilly on the east coast and we are wearing our boots and jackets. Central Park is so well maintained and it’s just fun to people watch and get a little exercise after being on the plane for several hours. We walked a lot of miles that day and enjoyed every minute of being in NYC. Later on Thursday we met up with Victoria, got to see her office, shopped a little more and met our good friend Mary Beth at Craftbar NYC for a fun dinner and reunion.
Roxanne and I spent the night with Victoria at her apartment in Brooklyn. Williamsburg where she lives is an up and coming area with lots of great restaurants and shops. We had breakfast with V and her roommate the next morning before she headed in to work and Roxanne and I took a taxi to Grand Central Station. We caught the train to Westport, CT for the relaxing part of our trip. My friends Roxie and Bruce have always been so generous with my family. We spent nearly every summer coming to New York and Westport for our vacation. We stayed with my friend Joyce in NY (I met Joyce on a modeling job when I lived in the city) and Roxie and Bruce in Westport. Timothy, Roxanne, Victoria and I have so many wonderful memories of spending July 4th here. My ties to New York are very deep because of the precious life long friends I made here. So off to beautiful Westport, CT and fun times with great friends who are truly like family!!
In Westport we had fun dinners at home with Roxie and Bruce and out on the town. I love The Greens Farms Congregational Church and we went to Easter services at this beautiful church.
It is 300 years old and was rebuilt after it was burned down in 1779 by the British. This area is so rich in history. After church we headed back to Williamsburg (in a car) to have Easter brunch and drop V at her apartment and take Roxanne to the airport.
There is a new cupcake store next to Victoria’s apartment so of course we had to get a few samples. After dropping Roxanne at LGA we headed back to Westport for more vacation for me!!!
Roxie is obsessed with her Zumba classes and I have gone every day so far. I have to admit her teacher Cindy is the best I have ever met, and the most fun.
Roxanne roomed with her friend Liza from summers in Westport when she went to The University of Richmond. It was fun to see Liza’s mom Nancy in her gorgeous home for a little happy hour.
I wish I could take you on a tour of all of the beautiful homes in this area. We all love Roxie and Bruce’s home and have enjoyed so many fun times here. On a side note I have decided to stay a few more days and I am really making my limited wardrobe work!! I even bought a smaller suitcase for this trip and was very careful to bring only a few pieces that would all work together. Now just worried I will run out of my harmones!!!!!!
