I met Bill Varney of Urban Herbal while planning my daughter’s wedding in Fredericksburg 2 years ago. The Hill Country is known for lavender among other things and since the wedding was outside in August we wanted to incorporate some local flavor. We went to several vineyards and shops searching for lavender products. Someone recommended Urban Herbal and that is where the story begins. Bill Varney is the delightful, enthusiastic owner who knows everything about herbs and has scaled down from a much larger business. His shop has all kinds of products made from herbs (including lavender) and he even has a separate building where he has cooking classes, with herbs, of course.
Bill (my husband) decided that since it would be probably be hot outside in August and we wanted our guests to enjoy the great band we had from Austin, that we needed some iced towels like country clubs have at golf tournaments. This became a huge quest for lavender water, containers and small towels. Bill V came to the rescue with the lavender water and suggestions on icing down the towels. They were a huge hit!!
Bill also made all of the Lavender Foaming Hand Wash for the restrooms, and has the most wonderful Lavender Vanilla Candles that I gave for gifts. The best part was that he came to the wedding!! He had been such a part of helping us pull things together that it meant a lot that he would attend. He is a very special new friend. We always stop in Urban Herbal when we visit Fredericksburg and our favorite B&B Hoffman Haus. On the last trip we discovered this fabulous room spray that smells so fresh and covers every odor you would want to hide (like in the bathroom!!!). It is the best kept secret and is mysteriously called Pure Air Sinus & Allergies Room Freshener. Great Discovery!!! There is also a wonderful body wash, Eucalyptus Mint Body Soak, that will clear your head in the morning. We have also used the Peppermint Foot Lotion and love it. The last time I ordered (we could not make it to FB) Bill V sent some lovely Pure Air Herb Tea (for congestion relief).
So the next time you make a trip to Fredericksburg be sure to give Bill Varney a visit at Urban Herbal. You are in for a real treat. If you like to cook he has many cooking oils with herbs and other ideas for healthy, natural and creative recipes and tips on using fresh herbs. You can schedule a fun cooking class for your group. Needless to say, yes, he has an herb garden!! Check out the website and you can always make an order online and if needed call Bill for some advice.
